As a science educator, I would find the 16th International Conference on Brain Informatics (BI'23) an exciting opportunity to learn about the latest brain research and artificial intelligence developments. The conference provides a platform for researchers and practitioners from diverse fields to present their original research results and exchange innovative ideas. The theme of the conference, "Brain Science Meets Artificial Intelligence," is particularly intriguing as it addresses the interplay between cognitive science, neuroscience, machine learning, data science, and ICT. I would enjoy attending the conference to gain insights into the latest research in cognitive and computational foundations of brain science, human information processing systems, brain big data analytics, informatics paradigms for brain and mental health research, and brain-machine intelligence. The conference would help me stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field and provide me with new ideas and perspectives to incorporate into my teaching practice.

Making sense of scents: Deciphering our sense of smell

  Scientists at the University of California - San Francisco (UCSF) have created the first molecular-level, 3D picture of how an odour molecule activates a human odorant receptor, a crucial step  in deciphering the sense of smell. They used cryo-electron microscopy to visualise how a scent molecule binds to the OR51E2 receptor, which responds to propionate and contributes to the pungent smell of Swiss cheese. The study is significant for fragrance, food science, and other applications that rely on olfactory receptors.
